Trip Planner

Our personal recommendations — pick what suits you and explore.

Three day trips for each county, planned from a home base (Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno or Agios Nikolaos) with realistic driving times. Pick one to get started.

From Heraklion

Heraklion: Old Town & Knossos
Knossos and the Archaeological Museum with plenty of breathing room: coffee first, Knossos early, a long lunch in the old town and the museum in the afternoon. No long drives.
Heraklion: Archanes Wine Country
About 30 minutes from Heraklion, an easy, unhurried day: coffee, the Kazantzakis Museum, two Archanes wineries and a village lunch in between.
Heraklion: Gortyna, Phaistos & Kommos
A long day, about an hour's drive each way, so pastries first: ancient Gortyna, the Palace of Phaistos, then the afternoon on Kommos Beach and a late dinner by the sea before driving back.

From Chania

Chania: Akrotiri Peninsula
The Akrotiri peninsula, all within 30 minutes of Chania: a brunch start, the monastery, a swim at Seitan Limania (the path down is steep, so wear proper shoes), golden-hour views from the Venizelos Graves and a late dinner in the old town.
Chania: Gardens, Wine & Countryside
A gentle countryside day 20 to 35 minutes from Chania: pastries first, the Botanical Garden, a taverna lunch and a winery tasting.
Chania: Balos Beach Day
Balos deserves a full day: breakfast and pastries in the old town, then about an hour to Kissamos, a rough 8 km dirt road (allow about 40 minutes) and a 20-minute walk down to the lagoon. Spend the afternoon on the beach and have a late dinner at Gramboussa on the way back.

From Rethymno

Rethymno: Old Town & Fortezza
A walkable day in Rethymno itself, with long breaks between stops: handmade sweets, the Venetian fortress, a lemon-garden lunch and drinks in the old town.
Rethymno: Arkadi & Countryside
The historic Arkadi Monastery, a countryside lunch and a local brewery, all within 25 to 35 minutes of Rethymno, at a slow pace with plenty of time at each stop.
Rethymno: Preveli & the South Coast
About 55 minutes to the south coast, so start early: pastries, Preveli Monastery, a long swim at the palm beach (about 20 minutes' walk each way), a last stop at Plakias and a late taverna dinner on the way home.

From Agios Nikolaos

Lasithi: Spinalonga & Kolokytha
Everything within 25 minutes of Agios Nikolaos: breakfast in town, Spinalonga by boat from Elounda, an afternoon at Kolokytha Beach (a short bumpy road, then a walk), a late dinner in Elounda and gelato back in town.
Lasithi: Zeus's Cave & the Plateau
About 1h15 each way up to the Lasithi Plateau, with long breaks: breakfast, the Diktaion Cave (Zeus's birthplace; a steep 20-minute climb), a village lunch, then a stroll and gelato back in Agios Nikolaos.
Lasithi: Sitia, Toplou & Vai
A long beach day, about 1h15 to Sitia and 1h45 back from Vai, so leave after an early breakfast: Sitia, Toplou Monastery, an afternoon swim at Vai and a late dinner by the sea at Chiona.
