Crete isn't just the backdrop to our wedding. It's home. We live in Heraklion, on an island with thousands of years of history, its own dialect within the language, its own songs, and a cuisine studied around the world. What follows is a short, sourced tour for anyone who'd like to know a little more about the place before they visit.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum
One of the oldest and most important museums in Greece: the definitive museum of Minoan culture. Highlights include the Phaistos Disc, the Bull-Leaping Fresco, the "Snake Goddesses," the Hagia Triada Sarcophagus and the "Ring of Minos."
WebsiteHistorical Museum of Crete
Housed in the historic Kalokerinos mansion, it covers 17 centuries of Cretan history, from the Byzantine era to the present, picking up exactly where the Archaeological Museum leaves off. It holds a large part of the Nikos Kazantzakis archive (his library and study, reconstructed in dedicated rooms) and significant material on the WWII Battle of Crete.

Founded in 1983 by set designer Yiorgos Anemoyiannis, with the help of Eleni Kazantzaki, the author's second wife. It's located in Myrtia, the village his father's family came from.

Opposite the Byzantine Church of Panagia in Fodele, in a building believed to stand on the site of El Greco's birth home. Operating since 1998, it displays replicas of his work, information on his family, and a recreated painting workshop.
